The Board of Directors of The Next 36 is made of entrepreneurs, business leaders and academics who have made the program possible through their commitment of leadership, time and financial support. They all will play an active role in the program through mentorship, teaching, or guest lecturing.

Joseph Canavan

Former Chairman & Chief Executive Officer,
Assante Wealth Management; United Financial Corporation

Joseph C. Canavan was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Assante Wealth Management and United Financial Corporation, an affiliated asset management firm until November 2009. Assante is a national wealth management company with $27 billion in assets under administration, for over 300,000 clients across Canada.

Prior to joining Assante, Mr. Canavan was the President and CEO of Synergy Asset Management, a wealth management company he founded in December 1997 – an organization which quickly became known as one of Canada’s most innovative mutual fund companies. Synergy was acquired by CI Financial in October 2003.

In 1994, he launched GT Global (Canada), which became the fastest-growing mutual fund company in Canadian history. Under Mr. Canavan’s leadership, the company gained $2.4 billion in assets in less than 30 months. GT Global is now part of AIM Trimark. In 1989, he joined Fidelity Investments. As Vice President and Director of National Sales, he helped grow assets from $60 million to $6 billion in four years. He began his career as a financial advisor with Burns Fry Ltd.

Mr. Canavan was awarded “Person of Influence of the Decade” at the Canadian Investment Awards in 2004. In 2006, he was honoured as Concordia University’s “Alumnus of the Year.”

Mr. Canavan is Vice Chairman of the Children’s Aid Foundation, a director of the Fraser Institute and has recently retired from the Board of the National Ballet of Canada. Mr. Canavan has a Bachelor of Business Administration from Concordia University and has completed Harvard University's three-year executive management program for owners and presidents of companies.

Paul Desmarais

Risk Management Group, Great-West Life

Paul Desmarais works in the Risk Management Group of Great-West Life.  Previously he led projects at Imerys, a French mining company, in corporate strategy, supply chain management, key account management, and production optimization.  He worked at Goldman Sachs between 2004 and 2009 in the investment banking, investment management, and fixed income divisions.

Mr. Desmarais is the founder and honorary chairman or Young Canadians in Finance, a 500+ member organization dedicated to helping young Canadians achieve greater success in the field of finance through networking and education

Paul Desmarais is a graduate of Harvard College and INSEAD (MBA)

Julie Di Lorenzo

President, Diamante Urban Corp    

Julie is a leading Toronto builder and developer . She and her company were awarded Project of the Year an unprecedented three years in a row by the  Greater Toronto Home Builders Assoc.  Julie led Toronto's development boom following the recession of the early '90s with One Balmoral.  She also built One City Hall - one of the largest residential projects built in Toronto in this last business cycle at 550 residential units. She has served as President of the Greater Toronto Home Builder's Association (now called BILD) and has served on the Board of The  Ontario New Home Warranty Program now known as Tarion.  Julie is past board member of the Canadian Urban Institute, Canadian Club and The Harbourfront Centre and presently serves on the St. Michael’s Hospital Board, the Board of Havergal College  and CISEPO.  The Florian condominium project which broke ground in summer 2009 is one of the only residential projects to obtain construction financing in the difficult climate of 2008-9. Julie is about to launch a residential project in North York  in 2012 where a church was re-constructed as part of the re-development. Julie has advised various levels of government in her 30 year career in Toronto from the Mayor's Office, to advising the Minister Responsible for Women's Issues and The Minister of Economic Development in the early 90's and including working closely with the Provincial Minister of Infrastructure on Growth Management in the last 5 years.   In 2011, Julie was a participant in Finance Minister Flaherty's annual Policy Retreat.

Samuel Duboc

Co-Founder and Partner, EdgeStone Capital Partners
Chairman of the Board, Pathways to Education Canada

Mr. Duboc founded EdgeStone in 1999. Prior to EdgeStone, Mr. Duboc was a Managing Director and member of the Deals Review Committee at CIBC Capital Partners. He co-founded and served as COO of the Loyalty Group Inc. (Air Miles Reward Program), Canada’s most successful loyalty database marketing program. From 1990 to 1991, Mr. Duboc was COO of Holzman Jewellers, a U.S.-based jewellery chain and from 1984 to 1990, he worked at Bain & Company. Mr. Duboc currently serves on the Board of Directors of Porter Airlines, EZ Shield Parent, New Food Classics, Stephenson’s Rental and Bryker Technology Partners. Mr. Duboc is Chairman of Pathways to Education Canada (a non-profit organization focused on improving the lives of disadvantaged youth and their communities through educational attainment). Under Mr. Duboc’s leadership, Pathways has expanded to eleven communities, helping thousands of kids finish high-school and move onto post-secondary education. In 2000, Mr. Duboc was recognized as one of "Canada’s Top 40 Under 40™" and in 2005 was chosen as one of the “most influential“ alumni of the program. He is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), CAMH Foundation, United Way Major Giving Cabinet, Crescent School Board of Governors and is an active fundraiser for the SickKids Foundation.

Mr. Duboc holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University magna cum laude and Tau Beta Pi and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School

Charles Field-Marsham

Founder and President, Kestrel Capital Management Corp.

Charles Field-Marsham is a Canadian entrepreneur with more than 20 years of experience in building businesses in Africa. In 1991, he joined Credit Suisse First Boston in New York, he then lived and worked in Kenya between 1993 and 2003 where he started and acquired several businesses. In 2006, he founded Kestrel Capital Management Capital (KCMC), when he returned to Canada. KCMC provides consulting services to Charles’ businesses outside of Canada. Charles owns and is chairman of: Kestrel Capital, the leading investment bank and broker in Kenya; Panafrican Group, the distributor of Komatsu equipment in five countries across East and West Africa; and Kenya Fluorspar, one of the largest and lowest cost producers of fluorspar in the world.


Charles sits on the boards of The Foundation of the Hospital for Sick Children, Grand Challenges Canada, The Canadian Council on Africa, the African Medical Research Foundation Canada (AMREF) and The Next 36. Charles is also the principal benefactor and chairman of the Kenya Scholar Athlete Program (KENSAP) and The Charles and Rita Field-Marsham Foundation.
 

 

Scott Griffin

Chairman, General Kinetics Engineering Corporation

Scott Griffin is Chairman of General Kinetics Engineering Corp., a Canadian engineering-based company engaged in the design and manufacture of large bore shock absorbers.  He is Chairman and founder of Advance Precision Limited, a company that supplies close-tolerance machined parts to the automotive industry and Chairman of House of Anansi Press Inc., an intermediate literary Canadian publishing company, publishing fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Scott is also the founder and chairman of the The Griffin Trust for Excellence in Poetry. The Griffin Poetry Prize is the largest annual poetry prize, for a single book of poetry, in the world. Griffin is the Chancellor of Bishop’s University, Chairman of the Board of Governors of Sedbergh School and a director of a number of companies and charitable organizations. His extra-curricular activities include writing (My Heart is Africa, 2006), sailing, skiing, flying, reading, history, travel, squash and tennis.

Tim Hodgson

Managing Partner, Alignvest Capital Management

Tim Hodgson is a Managing Partner at Alignvest Capital Management, a leading alternative asset manager based in Toronto.  Previously he was Special Advisor to the Governor of the Bank of Canada.  He is also the former CEO of Goldman Sachs Canada Inc. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1990 and he has held a variety of senior positions in the firm’s New York City, London and Menlo Park, California offices. Before joining Goldman Sachs, Tim worked at Salomon Brothers, Price, Waterhouse & Co. and Merrill Lynch.

Mr. Hodgson serves on the Boards of the Global Risk Institute, the Richard Ivey School of Business, Brigdgepoint Hospital and is Co-Chair of True Patriot Love Expedition – Himalayas.  Mr. Hodgson was formerly on the boards of Goldman Sachs Canada and CW Media Inc.

He is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and is a Chartered Accountant.   He earned a B. Comm (Hons) from University of Manitoba and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario.

John Kelleher

President & CEO, RHB Group

John Kelleher is President & CEO of RHB Group LP, Canada’s leading designer and retailer of school uniforms operating under its trading brands of R.J. McCarthy, Halpern's, and Beatties. RHB Group is partnered with Birch Hill Equity Partners, a leading Canadian private investment firm. John was previously President & CEO of Black’s Photography, Canada’s largest specialty photo retailer. Under John’s leadership a major turnaround program was planned and executed at Black’s that reinvigorated same store sales, aggressively cut operating and capital costs, while launching hundreds of new digital products proving that Black’s could be about more than “just photography”. Before joining Black’s, John was a partner at ReichmannHauer Capital Partners, a Toronto-headquartered private equity fund that he helped to launch with several McKinsey colleagues and Canada’s Reichmann family.  Prior to launching RHCP, John was a consultant at McKinsey & Company where he worked for over 5 years. Prior to McKinsey, John worked at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in investment banking and equity research in New York. John has also worked on several occasions as a research associate for Professor Michael Porter of Harvard Business School. John’s writing on strategy, finance, and corporate governance have appeared in the McKinsey Quarterly, Canadian Business Magazine, the Toronto Star, and the National Post. John is a member of the Board of Directors of Covenant House, Canada’s largest youth homeless shelter. John has an Honours BA in business administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business where he graduated as Gold Medalist; an MA in public administration from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government; and an MBA from Harvard Business School where he graduated with Distinction.

Anthony Lacavera

Chairman and CEO, WIND Mobile

 

Anthony Lacavera is a Canadian-born entrepreneur who is boldly transforming the landscape of telecommunications in Canada. Since founding Globalive in 1998 after graduating from the University of Toronto with a Computer Engineering degree, Lacavera has led the company to become the global leader in next-generation telecommunications that it is today.

Throughout his career, Lacavera has worked to revolutionize telecommunications in Canada; encouraging a more globally competitive Canadian market.  Recognizing widespread consumer frustration with incumbent carriers, he spearheaded Globalive's participation in the Federal Government's 2008 Advanced Wireless Spectrum auction. Following the purchase of a significant amount of spectrum, Lacavera initiated a ground-breaking public engagement campaign that asked Canadians what they want in wireless.  Then, built on feedback from thousands of Canadians, Lacavera launched WIND Mobile, Canada's first new national wireless carrier in over a decade.

Lacavera was named CEO of the Year for 2010 by the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine.  He was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2006.  Under Lacavera’s leadership Globalive has received numerous best in business awards, including ranking #1 on Profit Magazine’s 2004 list of Canada’s 100 fastest growing companies.  Globalive has also been named one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies for six consecutive years, included in Deloitte's Technology Fast 50 and listed among Canada’s 50 Hottest Startups.

Lacavera's leadership extends beyond the communications sector into philanthropy. In July 2007, Globalive launched the SHAMBA foundation; a completely unique charity for charities’ whose programs help Canadian charities increase their efficiency and capacity, thereby optimizing their impact on the community.

A strong believer in developing Canada’s entrepreneurial spirit and competitiveness, Lacavera mentors the next generation of Canadian entrepreneurs through speaking engagements, and involvement in organizations such as The Next 36.

Patrick Meneley

Vice Chair, Head of Global Investment Banking, TD Securities & Executive Vice President, Wholesale Banking, TD Bank Financial Group

Patrick Meneley is the Vice Chair, Head of Global Investment Banking at TD Securities, responsible for overseeing all investment banking activities at TD Securities. He leads the group of professionals who provide advisory, corporate lending and underwriting services to corporations, governments and institutions on mergers and acquisitions and equity and debt financing. In addition, Patrick is a member of the TD Securities Supervisory Committee and Capital Commitment Committees.

 
Mr. Meneley joined the investment banking business at TD in 1997 as Head of the Communications and Media team. He has gained extensive experience and expertise through advising clients on a wide variety of strategic and financial transactions. Prior to joining TD Securities, Patrick worked on the investment banking team at Salomon Brothers Canada Inc.
 
Mr. Meneley values community involvement and serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Havergal College Foundation and is a member of the Board of Governors for Havergal College. Additionally, he serves on the Boards of Prostate Cancer Canada and HealthyKids International. Mr. Meneley is also past Chair of the Board of the Sterling Hall School.
Nadir Mohamed

President & CEO, Rogers Communications Inc.

Mr. Nadir H. Mohamed serves as President, Chief Executive Officer, Director of Rogers Communications Inc. Mr Mohamed previously served as President and Chief Operating Officer, Communications Group of the Corporation. Mr. Mohamed joined the Corporation in August 2000 as President and Chief Operating Officer of Rogers Wireless Inc. and served as President and Chief Executive Officer of RogersWireless Inc. from July 2001 to May 2005. Mr.Mohamed is also a board member of TD Bank Financial Group and Ryerson University’s Board of Governors. Mr.Mohamed holds an undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia and is a Fellow Chartered Accountant.

Reza Satchu

Managing Partner, Alignvest Capital Management

Reza Satchu is an entrepreneur, the creator of University of Toronto’s most highly rated undergraduate course, “Economics of Entrepreneurship,” and Founding Chair, Co-Chair and Co-Founder of The Next 36. 

Mr. Satchu is a Managing Partner of Alignvest Capital Management, an investment management company based in Toronto and New York..  Mr. Satchu has co-founded, built and managed four successful operating businesses all from inception, including:  SupplierMarket, a supply chain software company funded by Sequoia and KKR, that grew to 225 people with several Fortune 500 customers, prior to being sold to Ariba in 2000; StorageNow Holdings, which became Canada’s second largest self-storage company before being sold to InStorage REIT in 2007; Stellation Asset Management, an investment management firm that managed over $300 million; and most recently KGS Alpha Capital Markets, a US fixed income broker dealer launched in August 2010, that has quickly grown to over $150 million of equity capital and 70 employees.  Previously, Mr. Satchu spent 12 years in New York where he was a General Partner at Fenway Partners, a $1.5 billion private equity firm, and a Financial Analyst at Merrill Lynch. Mr. Satchu has received “Canada’s Top 40 Under 40™” Award (2007) and the Management Achievement Award from McGill University (2011).  He is the Vice Chairman of the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation, a member of the Canadian Advisory Board to the Harvard Business School and a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization.  He has a BA from McGill University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Francis Shen

Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer – Aastra Technologies Ltd.

Francis Shen is the Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Aastra Technologies Ltd. Mr. Shen began Aastra in 1983 and initially focused the company on Research & Development projects in the defense and aerospace industries. In the early 1990s, Mr. Shen redirected Aastra to focus on developing products for the telecommunications market.

By 1996, the company became a publicly traded company on a junior stock exchange. With substantial sales and profit growth, in 1999, the company moved onto the Toronto Stock Exchange. Between 2000 and 2008, Mr. Shen led a number of acquisitions of telecom business units from Nortel, Lucent, Ascom, EADS and Ericsson.

Mr. Shen was named Ontario’s 2000 Entrepreneur of The Year in the Technology & Communications category by Ernst & Young Canada.

Ilse Treurnicht

CEO, MaRS Discovery District

Ilse Treurnicht is the CEO of MaRS Discovery District, a leading innovation centre located in Toronto. She oversees both the development and operations of the MaRS Centre and its broad suite of entrepreneurship and innovation programs.

MaRS offers advisory services, market intelligence and entrepreneurship education to emerging companies in health care/life sciences, digital media/ICT, cleantech and social purpose businesses across Ontario.

Ilse has worked closely with the leadership of Toronto's academic institutions and teaching hospitals to create MaRS Innovation, an integrated commercialization platform for 14 Toronto Institutions and served as the interim Managing Director for a year following its formal launch in early 2008.

Ilse joined MaRS in early 2005 from her role as President & CEO of Primaxis Technology Ventures, a start-up stage venture capital fund focused on the advanced technologies sector. Prior to Primaxis, Ilse was an entrepreneur with senior management roles in a number of emerging technology companies.

She is an active member of Canada's innovation community, and has served on the boards of private companies, industry associations and research organizations, and has been a member of several government advisory panels.

Ilse holds a DPhil in chemistry from Oxford University, which she attended as a Rhodes scholar. 

Ajay Agrawal

Academic Director

Ajay Agrawal is the Peter Munk Professor of Entrepreneurship at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, where he teaches courses on strategy, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation. On Friday, April 13 the Graduate Business Council of the Rotman School of Management announced that the MBA Graduating Class of 2012 had voted Professor Ajay Agrawal 'Professor of the Year'. This is the sixth year Professor Agrawal received this honour; he also received the 2009 Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research. Professor Agrawal is a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, MA and a leader of the Innovation and Creative Industries group at the Martin Prosperity Institute. He has presented his research on the economics of innovation at a variety of institutions including Harvard University, MIT, Stanford University and the Federal Reserve Bank. Professor Agrawal has testified as an expert witness before the Canadian Copyright Board, authored policy papers for provincial and federal level government agencies and advised organizations in fields including robotics, digital media, software development, wireless, biotherapeutics and pharmaceuticals. He was an invited Visiting Scholar at Harvard University and MIT.

Claudia Hepburn

Executive Director & Co-Founder

The Executive Director and Co-Founder of The Next 36, Claudia Hepburn is an entrepreneur and public policy specialist with a track record of leadership building innovative education programs. Before founding The Next 36, as the Fraser Institute’s Director of Education Policy and Managing Director of their Ontario office, she founded Children First: School Choice Trust, the only Canadian program ever to win a Templeton Award for Social Entrepreneurship. She is a recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012) and was named in the press as one of Canada's Ten Most Inspiring Women of 2006 and one of the 2008 Top 25 Canadian Women of the Year. Ms. Hepburn has co-authored many studies and edited a book on education policy. She is a director of Kids & Company, a national childcare company that won an E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2012, of the W. Garfield Weston Foundation and The Fraser Institute. Ms. Hepburn has a BA from Amherst College, and an MA and B.Ed from the University of Toronto.
